All 21 Beaches of Mississippi Closed for Swimming due to HAB

21 Beaches of Mississippi, along the Gulf’s coast closed down due to blue-green harmful algal bloom (HAB) for swimming, according to Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ).

The National Geographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says, HABs occur when “colonies of algae- simple plants that live in the sea and freshwater- grow out of control and produce toxic or harmful effects on people” or wildlife.

NOAA further added, “The human illness caused by the HABs, though rare, can be debilitating or even fatal. HABs have been reported in every U.S. coastal state, and their occurrence may be on the rise. HABs are a national concern because they affect not only the health of people and marine ecosystems, but also the ‘health’ of local and regional economies.”

The cause has been partly identified to be the opening of the Bonnet Carre spillway in Louisiana, which has triggered “excessive” freshwater to the coastline, the Jackson Clarion Ledger reported.

The people are still allowed to use the stand portion of the beaches, however, they are not allowed to get into the water for any reason or consume anything from the waters until they are notified.
